About Master in Media Ecologies

At Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, applications close 15 Jul.

The Master's programme in Media Ecologies at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is a subject- and theory-oriented course taught in English. It explores two interconnected ideas: understanding media as ecologies — not as isolated technologies but as networks and milieus — and examining how ecological knowledge and environmental awareness are themselves shaped by media, from photographs of the Blue Planet to computer models of climate change. The programme thus addresses both media as ecology and the role of media in ecology, with a thematic scope that encompasses climate change, digitalisation, and the relationship between past and future. The programme runs for 4 semesters. Core modules introduce the main questions and methods of media ecology, while project modules give students the chance to work in interdisciplinary teams on subjects such as Digital Environments, Planetary Media, and Archive Ecologies. Compulsory elective and elective modules can be drawn from the broader course offerings of the Faculty of Media, including computer science, as well as from civil and environmental engineering, architecture and urbanism, and art and design. The Master's thesis is completed and defended in English. Teaching combines group work, film essays, excursions, e-learning, and seminar discussion. The programme begins in the winter semester and is offered at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in Weimar, Germany.
