From Cyber Security student to Security Analyst
Morten Larsen transitioned swiftly from a Cyber Security bachelor's degree at Noroff University College to a Security Analyst role at Netsecurity, where he effectively leverages his technical skills and customer relations experience to analyze incidents and advise on security measures in a dynamic and rapidly growing cybersecurity industry.
As cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated, the demand for cybersecurity professionals continues to grow. For Morten Larsen, a bachelor’s degree in Cyber Security led to a role as a Security Analyst at Netsecurity.
While many graduates spend time searching for their first relevant role, Morten Larsen’s career path moved forward quickly.
Shortly after completing his bachelor’s degree in Cyber Security at Noroff University College, he joined Netsecurity as a Security Analyst.
Today, he works as part of the company’s Security Operations Center (SOC), where he analyses security incidents, supports customers, and helps identify and respond to cyber threats.
– I work as a Security Analyst, but I’m also heavily involved in customer relations and advising on security measures. The role is really a combination of analyst and security consultant, he explains.
Started His Career Shortly After Graduation
Morten describes the transition from student life to an industry defined by constant change and emerging threats as both challenging and exciting.
– The transition into working life was probably a bit intense, but Noroff prepared me well for what I would encounter in the industry. The programme provided a strong academic foundation for the work I do today, says Morten.
He found that the knowledge he gained during his studies was relevant from day one.
– I already had a solid technical foundation when I started. At the same time, success in this field also depends on being willing to keep learning and building on what you already know.
Applying What He Learned Every Day
In his role at Netsecurity, Morten regularly uses many of the skills and concepts he learned during his studies.
– Many of the technical subjects at Noroff are highly relevant to the work we do in the Security Operations Center. They provide a solid understanding of how to analyse incidents and work with security in a practical environment.
However, cybersecurity is about more than technology alone.
– I also have a background in sales and customer service, which is very valuable when working with clients. In addition, topics such as compliance and security governance are covered during the programme and play an important role in day-to-day work.
No Two Days Are the Same
Life in the cybersecurity industry is rarely predictable.
– There’s a lot of communication, advising, and customer follow-up, but also technical analysis and investigative work. At the same time, you’re constantly challenged by new digital threats and security issues, he says.
A large part of the role involves analysing incidents and alerts.
– We analyse what we call alerts, which can be incidents that have already occurred or events that have the potential to develop into larger security issues. It gives you a real sense that you’re helping to make a difference.
A Growing Field with Strong Career Opportunities
The demand for cybersecurity expertise continues to grow. Organisations across both the public and private sectors need professionals who can prevent, detect, and respond to cyber threats.
For Morten, his education became the starting point for a career in an industry that is evolving rapidly and where skilled professionals are in high demand.
– The most important thing is to stay curious and be willing to learn. Technology is constantly changing, and so are the opportunities, he says.
He believes the programme gave him a strong foundation for entering the workforce quickly.
– The programme gave me a solid foundation to build on. The rest comes down to continuing to apply what you've learned, developing your skills over time, and being willing to keep learning throughout your career.
