Master in Language and Media Studies

Frankfurt (Oder), Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The MA in Language and Media Studies at European University Viadrina investigates the mechanisms, functions, and effects of language and media in contemporary society. The programme integrates methodological, theoretical, and empirical approaches from film and media studies with culturally oriented research on language use, covering topics such as digital communication, audiovisual media, social media, AI-mediated interaction, and the influence of language on public discourse and power structures. The curriculum is built around an introductory module, two specialisation topics selected from options including Aesthetics and Audiovisual Media, Language and the Body, Language and Media Cultures, and Language and Society, and two elective modules. A central research module runs over three semesters, in which students develop an independent research project in small groups with close supervision, culminating in the Master's thesis. Practical and language skill development options are also available, including language courses at the Viadrina Language Centre offered free of charge. The programme closes with an oral examination. The programme runs over 4 semesters, available in both winter and summer semesters, and is based at European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany.
