About the Program

The Master of Science in Computer Science at Paderborn University is structured around five focus areas: Classical and Quantum Algorithm Design, Computer and Communication Systems, Data Science and Intelligent Systems, Security, and Software Engineering. Students build formal, algorithmic, and mathematical competences, and develop the ability to work with complex, incomplete, or contradictory information and to handle problems that are not fully specified from the outset. The programme runs over 4 semesters, with entry available in both winter and summer semester. Students are largely free to choose nine course modules according to their interests, with no compulsory subjects among those modules. A Key Skills module develops scientific writing and presentation abilities. A central element of the programme is the Project Group module, in which teams of approximately eight to sixteen students work on a research-related project over one year. The final semester is reserved for the Master's thesis. The programme prepares graduates for high-level professional positions or for continuation into a PhD.
