About the Program

The MSc in Computer Science at HPI (Hasso Plattner Institute, University of Potsdam) is structured around a track system that allows students to concentrate in one of six areas: Algorithms and Foundations, Data and AI, Digital Health, Security Engineering, Systems, or an Open Track for those who wish to combine modules across areas. The programme places explicit emphasis on scientific methodology and research ethics, with mandatory modules in Research Methods and Ethics and Critical Reading and Discussion. The 4-semester programme accepts students in both the winter and summer semesters. The curriculum includes mandatory modules in a Computer Science Lab and core Computer Science content, alongside elective Professional Skills modules in Design Thinking, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Law and Compliance, Management and Leadership, and Technology Communication and Transfer. Students work collaboratively on a research-related question connected to one of the programme tracks, including projects with external partners. The programme concludes with a Master's thesis.
