The Master of Science in Computer Science at Kiel University is a four-semester programme with a research-oriented character. Lectures are offered in both German and English, and the programme is designed so that students can complete it with proven knowledge of either language. The programme gives students considerable flexibility in assembling their study plan. Elective modules in computer science account for 60 to 65 ECTS, non-subject-specific modules account for 10 to 15 ECTS, a seminar contributes 5 ECTS, and a project contributes 10 ECTS; the Master's thesis accounts for the remaining 30 ECTS. Students are not required to select a research adviser for their thesis at the outset, and programmes can be modified after studies begin; however, selecting a research adviser by the start of the final year is recommended. Applicants whose previous degrees do not exactly match departmental requirements but cover a significant portion of them may be invited to take an online exam to assess their suitability.
