About Master of Arts in Library and Information Sciences

The course is designed to provide specialised training and the required national and international practical and theoretical skills for librarians and information professionals. The degree promotes research in the field by integrating traditional and digital theories and practices. It also aims to enhance librarians and information professionals' careers and give them a body of knowledge and experience to position themselves in the local and international communities. The degree is structured around the concept of a one-year common compulsory course that covers the main library and information theories and practices. After the first year, you will be asked to choose between: Stream A - Library and Information Management; Stream B - Rare Books and Manuscripts.

It offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in the fields of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, medicine, and engineering. The University of Malta traces its origins to the Collegium Melitense, founded by papal charter in 1592, making it one of the oldest universities in the Mediterranean. It has around 12,000 students, including about 2,800 from more than 144 countries, spread across fourteen faculties. Its main campus is at Msida, with further campuses at Valletta, Marsaxlokk and Gozo.

How tuition works

This catalogue lists 20 of its master's and doctoral programmes, almost all taught in English. Full-time postgraduate fees follow published bands: €10,800 a year for arts and business-related programmes, €13,400 for science-based ones, €14,400 for the Executive MBA, and €11,000 for doctorates. Part-time and extended versions of the same degrees spread the same total cost over more years, which is why their published annual figure is lower.

All students from all countries are eligible to apply to this program.

Applicants must be in possession of: a first cycle degree obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) or Category II in Knowledge and Information Management; or a first cycle degree obtained with a Third Class (Honours) or Category III in Knowledge and Information Management, with a portfolio documenting proven professional experience; or a first cycle degree obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) or Category II in any other subject, provided they possess other qualifications including relevant experience. Admission may also be granted to applicants in possession of the Diploma in Library and Information Studies with at least a Merit classification, subject to RPL evaluation.
