About the Program

The Master's programme in Software Systems Engineering at RWTH Aachen University covers the design and implementation of complex software systems, including their integration into technical and socio-technical contexts. The curriculum spans theoretical computer science, communication, data and information management, applied computer science, and software engineering. Students develop both depth in specific areas and breadth across disciplines through a structured combination of lectures, seminars, and a lab course. The standard duration is four semesters, starting in the winter semester. Each semester requires completion of credits across multiple curriculum areas. Students must take at least 12 credits in theoretical computer science and at least 12 credits in software engineering, and a mandatory course on managing large software system engineering projects is required. A seminar and a lab course are also compulsory. The programme concludes with a Master's thesis in the fourth semester. Each student is assigned a personal mentor from the Computer Science Department. Non-EU applicants are required to submit GRE general test results with their application. Non-German speaking students attend a basic German language course in their first semester.
