Master in Materials Science

The Master's in Materials Science at the Technical University of Darmstadt focuses on functional materials, with particular emphasis on structure, synthesis, analysis, modelling, and characterisation. Material types covered include ceramics, inorganic and organic semiconductors, thin films, energy materials, metals, and nanomaterials. Compulsory courses address surface and interface science, theoretical materials science spanning quantum mechanics, non-equilibrium thermodynamics and continuum mechanics, materials analytics, and sustainable materials science. The programme runs over 4 semesters. In the first two semesters, students complete compulsory courses alongside elective modules in specialisation areas such as magnetism and magnetic materials, semiconductor interfaces, advanced microscopy, ceramic materials, electrochemistry in energy applications, graphene and carbon nanotubes, and others. The third semester is centred on the Advanced Research Lab, an independent research project in one of the department's research groups that serves as preparation for the Master's thesis. The fourth semester is devoted to the Master's thesis. Between 22 and 26 credit points of elective materials science courses and between 6 and 10 credit points of general studies courses must be completed before starting the thesis. Mentoring by a professor is strongly encouraged. The programme is taught in English with no German language requirement, and is offered for both winter and summer semester entry at the Technical University of Darmstadt in Darmstadt, Germany.
