Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

Master in Materials Science and Engineering (MSc)

Karlsruhe, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The Master's in Materials Science and Engineering at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is an interdisciplinary programme preparing students for careers in the development and improvement of materials for modern technologies. Application areas covered include composite materials for lightweight construction, high-performance functional materials for information and energy storage, and biocompatible materials for medical equipment. The English-taught track of the programme has been available since the winter semester 2020/2021 and is connected to the Cluster of Excellence 3D Matter Made to Order (3DMM2O), jointly operated by KIT and Heidelberg University. The programme runs over 4 semesters and is structured to begin with comprehensive major courses in materials science covering thermodynamics, kinetics, materials characterisation, simulation, and properties. Students then choose two of four focal specialisations: Functional Materials, Materials Processing, Computational Material Science, or Structural Materials. A mandatory nine-week internship provides industry exposure. The Master's thesis in the final semester requires independent work on a problem addressed using scientific methods. German and English language courses are integrated into the programme. The programme is based at KIT in Karlsruhe, Germany, and accepts students in both winter and summer semesters.
