About the Program

The Master of Science in Materials Science at Paderborn University is positioned at the interface of the chemistry and physics departments, and is complemented by content from mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and electrical engineering. The programme focuses on the experimental and theoretical aspects of modern materials science, with particular emphasis on functional materials and their application in areas including energy, health, mobility, and information technology. The first two semesters cover compulsory courses in the fundamental concepts of materials science, supplemented by elective courses in four advanced areas: Materials Analysis, Materials Processing, Functional Materials, and Computational Materials Science. In the third semester, elective courses continue alongside a lab course and a research-oriented project within a working group. The fourth semester is reserved for the Master's thesis, conducted within one of the four departments, culminating in a written thesis and a concluding colloquium.
