About the Program

The International Master's in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Augsburg is an interdisciplinary full-time programme connecting physics, chemistry, and methods for the characterisation and processing of materials. The programme emphasises the natural sciences perspective — covering chemical, physical, and functional properties of materials — and targets application-oriented research in science and technology. Building on Bachelor's-level knowledge, students deepen expertise through lectures, elective courses, and method courses that provide practical laboratory experience using research facilities. Elective options span areas including spintronics, porous materials, optical materials, reinforced composites, low-temperature physics, and nanostructures, drawn from three blocks: Structural and Functional Materials, Digital Materials and Technologies, and Materials Sustainability. A laboratory project is completed in a research group during the third semester. The fourth semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis in one of the research laboratories. The programme is intended to be completed in four semesters. All classes are taught in English. The programme is offered at the University of Augsburg in Augsburg, Germany.
