About the Program

Geothermal Energy Systems is a three-semester Master's programme aimed at graduates of engineering or geoscience Bachelor's programmes who want to deepen their knowledge of geothermal energy production and prepare for careers in the energy sector or research. The curriculum covers the scientific, technical, and economic fundamentals of geothermal energy, organised across five content areas: Reservoir Engineering and Hydrogeology, including thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical processes; Drilling and plant technology for geothermal wells, power plants, and heating systems; Geochemistry and geophysics for rock and fluid analysis and exploration; Numerical modelling and simulation using tools such as FEFLOW or Modelica; and Energy and environmental policy covering economic, ecological, and regulatory frameworks. Practical project work, laboratory exercises, and research collaborations — including with the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Infrastructure and Geothermal Energy (IEG) — are central to the programme. There is particular emphasis on interdisciplinary project work, the practical application of scientific methods, and building communication and teamwork skills in intercultural settings. The programme is available for winter and summer semester entry. The programme is offered at Bochum University of Applied Sciences in Bochum, Germany.
