About the Program

Digitalised Energy Systems is a 4-semester master's programme at the University of Oldenburg, beginning in the winter semester. The programme addresses the digitalisation of energy infrastructure — including smart grids, renewable energy integration, energy markets, and cyber-resilience — with a focus on the engineering and design of cyber-physical energy systems. The curriculum is divided into three content areas. The first, Fundamental Competencies (54 credit points), covers computer science, automation, and electrical engineering, with two tracks — Automation and Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science and Energy Informatics — that are closely linked in content. The second area, Foundations of Digitalised Energy Systems (36 credit points), covers Digitalised Energy System Automation, Control and Optimisation; Digitalised Energy System Design and Assessment; and Innovation Topics and Smart Grids, which addresses domain-specific applications and current research. Topic areas across these sections include control theory, distributed artificial intelligence, co-simulation, requirements engineering, modelling, energy markets, and cyber-resilience. A cross-group research project integrates work on component-level control, communication, and agent-based optimisation in energy systems. The master's thesis module accounts for 30 credit points. Graduates are prepared either for research roles at institutions working on energy transition challenges, or for positions in the energy industry. International applicants must apply through uni-assist and submit documents by 15 June; the general deadline is 15 July. The programme is based at the University of Oldenburg in Oldenburg, Germany.
