Master in Geosciences (Master of Science)

Geosciences at Leibniz University Hannover is a four-semester Master's programme addressing Earth system challenges of global importance, including climate change, natural resource management, geohazard assessment, and environmental protection. The programme reflects how geosciences have evolved into a discipline integrating modern physical-chemical measurement methods with strong theoretical and mathematical-physical model thinking. Content spans the analysis and modelling of processes at the Earth's surface and in deeper layers across different time and spatial scales. The curriculum is largely elective-based, with one compulsory module on scientific communication. Students choose from four specialisation areas: Soil/Water, covering soil science, hydrogeology, and water management; Sedimentary systems and tectonics; Applied geology and geophysics, including sedimentology, raw materials, and numerical modelling; and Mineralogy/Geochemistry, covering isotope geochemistry, mineral deposits, and spectroscopic analysis. Individual projects and field excursions can be selected within each specialisation. It is also possible to attend complementary courses from other programmes.
