About Master in Computational Mechanics of Materials and Structures (COMMAS)

For Master in Computational Mechanics of Materials and Structures (COMMAS), applications close 15 Feb.

The COMMAS MSc programme at the University of Stuttgart focuses on the development and implementation of numerical methods and simulation techniques for complex engineering problems. Students learn approaches to model, understand, predict, and validate the behaviour of materials and structures across engineering disciplines — with applications including automobile crash simulations, failure load prediction, biological tissue modelling, and functional materials for robotics. The 4-semester programme begins in the winter semester. The first semester is dedicated to compulsory modules (30 ECTS) covering mechanics fundamentals, engineering materials, numerical methods, discretisation schemes, and scientific programming. In the second and third semesters, students choose from a broad range of elective courses, with internationally recognised experts contributing through a summer school programme. The fourth semester is reserved for the Master's thesis, embedded in the research activities of participating groups. Successful completion awards 120 ECTS and qualifies graduates to pursue doctoral studies without additional academic requirements. An optional double degree is available in cooperation with the Numerical Methods in Engineering (MNME) programme at Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, with the first two semesters at Stuttgart and the final two in Barcelona. The programme is offered at the University of Stuttgart in Stuttgart, Germany.
