About Master in Automation and Robotics

Automation and Robotics at TU Dortmund University is a four-semester Master of Science programme with three areas of specialisation: Robotics, Process Automation in biochemical systems, and Cognitive Systems as control architecture for collaborative applications. Core control theory is covered across all tracks, along with more advanced topics including collaborative operation, real-time video and image processing, communication between system components, and AI-based control systems. Elective courses are drawn from a list that is updated periodically to reflect developments in the field. Study begins with one mandatory semester of classroom courses designed to bring students from different undergraduate backgrounds to a common technical level. Elective choices in subsequent semesters determine which of the three majors the degree reflects — Robotics, Process Automation, or Cognitive Systems — without requiring students to pre-select at entry. Later in the programme, two major practical components come into focus: a project group of six or more students working on a common topic, and an individual Master's thesis. Both address current technical or scientific problems. The programme is available entirely in English, though students may choose to take supplementary electives in German if appropriate. TU Dortmund University hosts this programme in Dortmund, with a winter semester intake.
