Master in Redesigning the Post-Industrial City (RePIC)

Bochum, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Redesigning the Post-Industrial City (RePIC) is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's programme running over four semesters, jointly designed and delivered by UNIC — the European University of Cities in Post-Industrial Transition. The programme addresses the pressures that continued population growth, climate change, economic globalisation, and resource scarcity place on urban environments, particularly in post-industrial settings. Students are trained through engaged research methods including City Labs, structured project collaboration, digital storytelling, and social design studios. The structure gives students significant mobility across partner institutions. All students begin together in Bochum in the first semester. In the second semester, they choose one of four tracks: Urban Transformations and Resilience (Cork/Liège), Inequality, Diversity, and Social Justice (Istanbul), Urban Analysis: Smart, Sustainable and Resilient Cities (Bochum/Oulu), or Governance of Post-Industrial Cities (Zagreb/Bilbao). The third semester allows students to pursue in-depth study or a research or professional placement at a host university. In the final semester, students complete a thesis — either a traditional thesis, a research manuscript aimed at publication, or a practical project with documentation — jointly supervised by two partner universities. The programme prepares graduates to apply advanced knowledge of urban transformations, institutional arrangements, and design challenges to practical and policy problems in cities around the world. Each year, the programme accepts a cohort of around 60 students. RePIC is based at Ruhr-Universität Bochum in Bochum, Germany, with study periods at partner universities across Europe.
