Bachelor in Navigation

The Bachelor's program in Navigation at the Polish Naval Academy in Gdynia is delivered in English over seven or eight semesters by the Faculty of Navigation and Naval Weapons, the oldest faculty at the Academy. The faculty's main mission is to educate candidates for officer roles involving weapons systems operation and command of Polish Navy ships, and for the past fifteen years it has also trained civilian students for officer duties aboard commercial ships and across the wider maritime industry. The faculty is organized around four units: the Institute of Navigation and Maritime Hydrography, the Institute of Naval Weapons and Computer Science, the Department of Ship's Operation, and the Department of Hydroacoustics. Teaching follows both Poland's civilian and military regulations and the recommendations of international maritime conventions. Two courses of study are offered at the faculty, navigation and computer science, with a further option to continue into a second-cycle specialty in marine navigation. Students and staff have access to a set of ship simulators and laboratories covering radio navigation systems, electronic navigational charts, hydrometeorology, shipboard navigational aids, and ship manoeuvring and automated navigation systems, as well as a planetarium used for astronomical navigation training. This equipment supports the practical side of navigation study, where officers need to translate theory into judgment on the bridge. A navigation degree of this kind typically leads toward roles such as deck officer, watchkeeping officer, or shore-based positions in maritime administration and ship operation, building on core subjects like chartwork, meteorology, ship stability, and maritime law alongside the naval-specific training offered at Gdynia.
