Bachelor in Navigation

Offered in English over seven or eight semesters, the Bachelor's program in Navigation at the Polish Naval Academy sits within the Faculty of Navigation and Naval Weapons in Gdynia, the oldest faculty of the Academy. Its core mission is preparing officers to operate weapons systems and command Polish Navy ships, and over the last fifteen years it has broadened its remit to also train civilian students for officer duties aboard commercial vessels and across the maritime sector generally. The faculty rests on four pillars: the Institute of Navigation and Maritime Hydrography, the Institute of Naval Weapons and Computer Science, the Department of Ship's Operation, and the Department of Hydroacoustics. Study follows Poland's civilian and military regulations alongside international maritime conventions, and students choose between two courses at the faculty, navigation and computer science, with a second-cycle marine navigation specialty available afterward. Facilities available to students include a set of ship simulators, laboratories dedicated to radio navigation systems, electronic navigational charts, hydrometeorology, shipboard navigational aids, and ship manoeuvring and automated navigation systems, and a planetarium for celestial navigation exercises. This blend of simulation and hands-on lab work is intended to give students working knowledge of both the equipment and the judgment needed on a ship's bridge. Navigation graduates from programs of this type typically move into deck officer roles, positions in maritime administration, or technical shore-based work, building outward from foundational coursework in chartwork, meteorology, ship stability, and maritime law that underpins the wider navigation curriculum at Gdynia.
