Medicine is the science and practice of diagnosing, treating, and preventing disease in the human body, combining biological science with clinical skill. Students begin with foundational courses in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and histology, building a detailed understanding of how the human body functions at cellular, systemic, and whole-organism levels. As the program progresses, the curriculum shifts toward pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, and the diagnosis and management of disease across specialties such as internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and psychiatry. Extensive clinical training in hospital wards and outpatient clinics allows students to work directly with patients under supervision, developing the examination, communication, and decision-making skills required of a physician. Graduates typically go on to postgraduate residency training in a chosen specialty before practicing as licensed doctors in hospitals, clinics, or research institutions, while some pursue careers in public health, medical research, or academic medicine. The long duration of medical education reflects the breadth of scientific knowledge and the depth of supervised clinical experience needed before independent practice. This program is delivered in English at Istanbul University, located in İstanbul, Turkey, and runs for 6 years.
