Ruhr-Universität Bochum

Master in Materials Science and Simulation

Bochum, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The Master's in Materials Science and Simulation at Ruhr-Universität Bochum provides comprehensive training in materials science, physics, and numerical methods, with a focus on applying advanced numerical and experimental methods across multiple length and time scales relevant to materials. The curriculum was developed in coordination with the partners of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS) and is regularly revised to reflect developments in research and industry. The programme runs over 4 semesters, starting in the winter semester. The first semester is devoted to fundamentals in programming, materials physics, and materials engineering, with an introductory materials modelling laboratory. In the second semester, a numerical methods course complements the theoretical foundation, and students begin selecting elective modules from fundamental and advanced option lectures to build their specialisation. The third semester continues this specialisation and includes a short research project. Soft skills courses in science communication and documentation run throughout the programme. The final semester is for the Master's thesis, supervised by mentors and focused on an independent scientific project. The programme is based at Ruhr-Universität Bochum in Bochum, Germany.
