TU Bergakademie Freiberg

Master in Computational Materials Science (CMS)

Freiberg, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The MSc in Computational Materials Science (CMS) at TU Bergakademie Freiberg trains engineers and scientists to design, process, and study novel high-tech materials using simulation and data analysis. The programme covers numerical and simulation methods including finite element methods, molecular statics and dynamics, machine learning and deep learning, Monte Carlo methods, cellular automaton, phase-field methods, statistical analysis, and digital image analysis and correlation. Spanning 4 semesters beginning in the winter semester, the programme opens with an introduction seminar covering scientific programming and modern computing environments. The first semester establishes a shared foundation in numerical analysis, mechanics of materials, and programming. The second semester introduces key simulation methods and their theoretical underpinnings, while the third semester includes elective courses covering specialised topics in computational engineering, mechanics, data mining, and machine learning, as well as a personal programming project. The fourth semester is reserved for the Master's thesis. Students can shape their trajectory around one of four areas: Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence, Continuum Modelling and Simulation, Atomistic and Multiscale Simulation Methods, or Materials Science. The programme is offered at TU Bergakademie Freiberg in Freiberg, Germany.
