Freie Universität Berlin

Master of Science in Bioinformatics

Berlin, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The MSc in Bioinformatics at Freie Universität Berlin provides advanced education in mathematics, computer science, biology, and translational bioinformatics, building on knowledge from a prior Bachelor's degree in the field. The programme is jointly conducted by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy, and the Charité Medical School. Students choose one of three focus areas: Complex Systems, which addresses modelling and simulation of complex networks; Data Science, which centres on analysis and knowledge extraction using modern statistics and machine learning; or Advanced Algorithms, with emphasis on efficient methods for large sequencing data and protein and RNA analysis. The four-semester curriculum begins with three foundational modules and an introduction to the focus areas, followed by a profile area that includes a research internship and a module on ethics and policy. Elective modules allow further specialisation. The programme starts in the winter semester and concludes with a Master's thesis, typically written in the fourth semester over 23 weeks. The programme is offered at Freie Universität Berlin in Berlin, Germany.
