Master in Agrobioinformatics

Agrobioinformatics combines computational tools and methods from bioinformatics with the biological and agricultural sciences, working toward practical solutions to challenges such as food insecurity and climate change. This English-language MSc at Justus Liebig University Giessen trains students to analyse and interpret large-scale data from genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and related disciplines, covering topics from the basics of programming and quantitative genetics through to the development of full analysis pipelines. Structured over 4 semesters, the programme consists of eight mandatory core modules and six optional profile modules, plus a work placement and Master's thesis. Core modules include Applied Statistics, Analysis of DNA and RNA Sequencing Data, Gene Expression Analysis and System Biology, Python Programming for Bioinformatics, Genetics of Crop Diversity, Biotechnology and Genomics, and Statistical Learning and Neural Networks. The profile modules allow students to build a competence profile suited to their interests and intended career path, drawing from a wide subject catalogue across the faculty. Students also gain exposure to applied agrobiotechnology services — including genotyping, phenotyping, sequencing, and double haploid production — and to areas of plant protection and seed production that are in demand at upstream production companies.
