The MSc in Biochemistry at Friedrich Schiller University Jena advances students' knowledge of molecular biology and biochemistry, with a focus on applying methodical approaches to the analysis of biomolecules and cellular functions across a broad range of scientific fields. The programme is coordinated by the Center for Molecular Biomedicine and draws on contributions from the Fritz Lipmann Institute on Aging, the Hans Knöll Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology, and the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, all located on the Beutenberg campus in Jena. The first semester covers three mandatory basic modules in spectroscopy and bioimaging, regulatory biochemistry, and cell biology. In the second semester, students choose three advanced modules from a catalogue of fourteen options spanning areas such as proteomics, systems biology, epigenetics, infection biology, and virology. The second year is fully dedicated to practical work and the Master's thesis in a laboratory of the student's choosing. The programme starts in the winter semester and runs over four semesters at Friedrich Schiller University Jena in Jena, Germany.
