The Master of Biomedical Engineering at Furtwangen University focuses on mathematical, numerical, and software-based approaches to problems in medical engineering. The curriculum covers modelling and simulation, computer mathematics, systems theory, sensorics, microcontroller programming, signal and image processing, and physiological modelling. Students are also introduced to medical devices, artificial organs, membranes, and minimally invasive surgery. The programme runs over three semesters, starting in the winter semester. The first semester establishes foundations in mathematics, methods, modelling and simulation, and common tools, while also introducing students to medical engineering through lab courses and introductory lectures. The second semester focuses on specialised lectures and research-related projects, including elective subjects chosen according to individual interests, and a Management Skills module. Class sizes are between 20 and 30 students, with approximately 20 contact hours per week and an equivalent amount of self-study expected. During the second semester, students undertake a research project at Furtwangen University, a cooperating company, or a hospital, which prepares them for the final Master's thesis.
