The MSc in Neural Engineering at htw saar – University of Applied Sciences covers the intersection of neuroscience and engineering, addressing how to understand, interface with, and manipulate the nervous system. Application areas in the programme include neuroergonomic human-machine interaction systems, brain-computer interfaces, active neuroimplants, neurocognitive and affective modelling, and neuro-inspired artificial intelligence systems. The programme runs over 3 semesters and can be started in either the winter or summer semester. The first semester covers fundamentals of neural and cognitive systems, including auditory processing, functional imaging, biomedical signal and image processing, and the practical manufacture of active implants, alongside risk management and biocompatibility topics. The second semester addresses neural signal analysis, mathematical modelling of neuronal activity, technical interfaces to the nervous system, neuro-inspired AI, and clinical neurophysiology, with compulsory courses supplemented by electives. Student projects and theses may be carried out in university labs or with external collaboration partners. The third semester is dedicated entirely to the Master's thesis, which may also be authored externally. Thesis results are presented in a seminar session, and publication is actively encouraged. Graduates are prepared for R&D roles in areas such as nerve stimulators, diagnostic devices, and active implants, as well as positions in neuroergonomics and neurorehabilitation.
