About the Program

The MA in Linguistics – Language, Communication and Cognition is jointly offered by the linguistic institutes of the Faculty of Philology and the Department of Cognitive Science of the Institute of Psychology at the University of Freiburg. The programme examines language in its forms, functions, historical development, variability, cognitive foundations, and communicative roles. Students choose one of six specialisations: English Language and Linguistics, General Linguistics and Linguistic Diversity, German Linguistics, Language and Cognition, Romance Linguistics, or Slavic Linguistics. Those selecting the English Language and Linguistics or General Linguistics and Linguistic Diversity tracks can complete the degree entirely in English. The programme combines broad interdisciplinary courses with focused training in the chosen specialisation, and students have some flexibility to explore modules from other specialisation areas. The four-semester programme starts in the winter semester. It is offered at the University of Freiburg in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.
