The Doctoral Programme in Health Sciences at Tampere aims to enable graduates to work effectively in both academic roles — researcher, teacher — and other expert positions in society. Doctoral candidates develop deep familiarity with their specialist area while acquiring a broader view of health sciences, mastering scientific thinking, and internalising good scientific practice along with the diverse skills of a researcher. The doctoral degree also qualifies graduates to supervise students and lead research groups. The programme offers doctoral degrees in health sciences or philosophy within various fields: biostatistics, epidemiology, gerontology, nursing science, public health, social psychiatry, social and health policy, health services research, health economics, global health and development, and health sociology. An intermediate licentiate degree is also an option. Most doctoral students write their dissertations within research groups in their field, primarily defined by the field of study of their supervisor. Applicants must hold a master's degree, a graduate degree, or a corresponding degree in health sciences.
