Master in Department of Electrical Engineering

Graduate study in electrical engineering at the master's level moves past the broad undergraduate curriculum into more specialized, research-focused coursework, typically built around a thesis in an area such as power electronics, communications, integrated circuit design, control systems, or signal processing. Students develop greater independence at this stage, sharpening their skills in mathematical modeling, simulation, and experimental methods while narrowing their focus to a particular area of the discipline. Advanced seminars and lab-based research projects generally introduce students to current open problems in the field and to the methods used to investigate them, helping prepare graduates for either specialized roles in industry or further study toward a doctorate. Given how wide-ranging electrical engineering is as a field, spanning communications, power systems, and computing hardware among other areas, a master's degree allows students to build real depth in one or two chosen subfields.
