Master in Data Science

The MSc Data Science at the University of Augsburg draws equally from computer science and mathematics to give students a thorough grounding in the concepts and methods that underpin modern data analysis. Core topics include machine learning, AI, and deep learning; statistics, matrix algorithms, and the mathematical foundations of machine learning; data structures, algorithms, and optimisation for big data; and data engineering with big data infrastructures. Because the programme includes compulsory courses in both mathematics and computer science, candidates are expected to arrive with solid preparation in both areas. Running over 4 semesters, the curriculum is structured around core data science methods worth 32 credits, a broad set of elective modules in mathematics and computer science worth at least 36 credits, project work including a data science project and seminar, a module on social aspects and ethics, and a 30-credit master's thesis. Students can apply knowledge in fields such as medicine, economics, engineering, geography, material science, and physics through collaboration with adjacent departments.
