The Bachelor of Engineering in Maritime Technology prepares graduates for the role of Chief Engineer Officer aboard ships. Studies in engineering within seafaring cover mechanical engineering, seafaring skills, ship technology, and electrical engineering. After completing the degree and the required onboard training, graduates can apply to the maritime authorities (Traficom) for a certificate of competency as Watch Officer Engineer. With sufficient subsequent work experience as an Engineer Officer, graduates become eligible to apply for a Chief Engineer Officer certificate of competence. The Chief Engineer's responsibilities, as described in the programme, include overseeing the technical operations and safety of a ship's technical department in a manner safe for both people and the environment. The programme is structured around those core tasks. Teaching combines lectures with digital learning environments and digital platforms. Projects completed in cooperation with the business community, including the degree thesis, provide opportunities for networking and specialisation. The programme is two years in duration and starts in January 2026. It is offered in English at Novia University of Applied Sciences in Kotka, Finland.
