Technische Hochschule Köln - University of Applied Sciences

Master in Automation & IT (Master of Engineering)

Gummersbach, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Information technology has shaped automation for over a quarter century, and the Automation & IT Master's programme at Technische Hochschule Köln addresses that convergence directly. The programme covers both industrial automation and computer science, with subject areas that include modelling and simulation, smart automation and robotics, optimisation, data science, machine learning and AI, industrial communication, industrial IT, and IT security. Laboratory and research facilities on campus support hands-on learning throughout, and the programme maintains strong connections to industry, with project work carried out in both research and industrial settings. Spanning 4 semesters and starting in the winter semester, the first two semesters build technical knowledge through lectures, tutorials, and laboratory courses. In the third semester, students carry out case studies in small teams of three to five people, putting the skills acquired earlier into applied practice. The fourth semester is devoted to the Master's thesis. On completion, students are awarded the degree of Master of Engineering (MEng). The programme is designed for graduates of electrical engineering or closely related fields who want to develop expertise at the intersection of automation and IT. An instructional philosophy that emphasises real-life experience — through laboratory training, co-ops, and internships — means students graduate with both theoretical depth and practical exposure to industrial environments. All courses are in English at Technische Hochschule Köln in Gummersbach.
