About the Program

AI in Biomedicine (AIBM) is a research-oriented master's programme that trains students to apply artificial intelligence methods to medical and biomedical problems. The curriculum spans the full landscape of AI, machine learning, and data science, with domain coverage in diagnostics, drug discovery, personalised treatment, and healthcare systems. Technical themes include Trustworthy AI, Human-Centered AI, and Multi-Modal and Generative AI, all oriented toward biomedical applications. The programme is offered at the Technical University of Munich in cooperation with Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and carries an optional Research Excellence Certificate. Structured over 4 semesters starting in the winter semester, the curriculum is organised into four topic areas: Foundations of AI, Applications of AI in Biomedicine and Healthcare, a Focus Subject chosen by the student, and Cross-Cutting Themes covering entrepreneurship, science communication, and public engagement. Students who earn at least 30 additional credits on top of the standard curriculum graduate with the designation "with Honours." The Master's thesis may be completed at TUM, FAU, or at an academic or industry partner. Students are encouraged to build connections with research institutions and companies both within and outside Germany through external research projects, colloquia, and excursions. Those who wish to deepen their profile may pursue additional elective courses, a second focus subject, an additional seminar, and a further research project under the Research Excellence Certificate track.
