You start with a placement in semester 2, combining work at least 16 hours per week with studying at HZ University of Applied Sciences in Vlissingen. Your placement must meet specific criteria, including supervision by an HBO-registered nurse and the ability to apply what you learn directly in practice. Your role will evolve from basic care to complex care situations, with a focus on leadership, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

The programme lasts four years if you take the regular route, or 2.5 years if you have an MBO nursing diploma.

In the first semester of the first year, you learn foundational nursing theory, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and professional communication. You also develop practical skills, such as measuring blood pressure and calculating medication doses. Your role as a nursing professional is shaped by a combination of practical experience, professional coaching, and theoretical knowledge.

In the latter years, you gain experience in more complex care situations and develop your leadership skills, collaboration, and analytical abilities. You also learn to observe patients, determine care needs, and make evidence-based decisions.

• You get to choose a minor in the third year, which can be taken at HZ, another university, or abroad.
• In the fourth year, you work as a novice nurse, applying your knowledge and skills in complex care situations, underpinning your actions, and taking increasing responsibility.

You attend one day per week at the HZ in Vlissingen for in-depth meetings combining theory and practice.
