Master in Physics (MSc)

The Master's degree programme in Physics at TU Dresden is designed to consolidate understanding of the connections between different areas of physics and neighbouring disciplines. The programme runs over four semesters, with the first year focused on coursework and seminars and the second year on a research project. Taught modules in the first year cover experimental and theoretical physics broadly, with specialisation available in five areas: Applied Physics and Photonics, Solid State and Materials Physics, Particle and Nuclear Physics, Theoretical Physics, and Soft Matter Physics and Biophysics. Students also select a non-physics minor from twelve subject areas, including mathematics, electrical engineering, chemistry, biology, computer science, philosophy, materials science, and economics, among others. During the research phase in the second year, students undertake scientific research studies and write their Master's thesis, both typically on a single overarching topic chosen from within the departmental specialisation areas. An advanced laboratory course is part of the curriculum for students pursuing an experimental specialisation. The programme is available as a four-semester or eight-semester (part-time) track and admits students for both winter and summer semesters.
