The MRes is organised over three terms. In the autumn term you plan your research methodology and attend three taught modules. The spring term continues with the remaining module while you begin substantive research. The summer term is devoted entirely to developing and writing a 20,000-word thesis. Part-time study spreads the same structure over two years.

Philosophical inquiry underpins the course, inviting you to explore questions across ethics, mind, epistemology and interdisciplinary areas such as law, mental health, theology and mathematics. By selecting optional modules that match your interests, you situate your project within the department’s diverse expertise.

You will engage in seminars, workshops and reading groups, conduct independent research, and receive supervision from specialists. You will also contribute to departmental research events and may present your work at conferences. The final months focus on drafting and submitting your thesis.
