The PhD programme in Systems Neuroscience at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover aims to provide interdisciplinary training in neurosciences, with a deliberate emphasis on breadth rather than premature specialisation. The curriculum spans the basics of cellular and molecular neuroscience, sensory systems including auditory, olfactory, and visual processing, cognitive and behavioural systems, limbic systems, motor systems, and clinical applications of systems neuroscience, plus supporting areas such as biometrics, biophysics, and animal welfare. Courses are taught jointly by professors from both theoretical and clinical disciplines, reflecting the programme's commitment to linking basic and applied science. Students design individualised course plans in consultation with their supervisors and the Zentrum für Systemische Neurowissenschaften (ZSN) curriculum, with at least 50 percent of courses mandatory and approximately 50 percent elective. An annual university-wide colloquium is held, at which students give a poster presentation after the first year and a lecture after the second year.
