The doctorate is a pure research programme normally completed in three to four years of full-time study, with a maximum of seven years for part-time candidates. In the first year students produce a detailed literature review and a research proposal, which is then approved by the supervisory panel before moving on to data collection and analysis in later years.

Students devote most of their time to developing and carrying out an original research project, accessing specialist facilities such as fMRI, ERP and virtual-reality labs. Weekly supervisory meetings, lab work, data cleaning and statistical analysis, as well as the preparation of conference papers and journal articles, form the core of week-to-week activity.
