PhD Postgraduate research in Humanities: Linguistics

The PhD programme is organised in three sequential stages – registration, progression and examination – each marked by defined milestones. Registration begins with an online Expression of Interest, a conditional offer, allocation of a Director of Studies and the submission of a research proposal, followed by an interview. The full-time route lasts up to four years, part-time up to eight.

Research is situated within linguistics, examining how language, discourse and society intersect. Typical themes include post-communist migration narratives, netnographic studies of online discourse, dialect structure in the West Midlands and the linguistic dimensions of Brexit. Under the supervision of a principal supervisor and additional experts you will produce an original dissertation of about 90,000 words (45,000 for an MPhil).

Progression requires a written paper and oral presentation within 18 months (full-time) or 36 months (part-time), after which the final thesis is examined through a written submission and a viva voce.
