PhD in Pharmaceutical science

The PhD programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Medical University of Gdańsk is taught in English and is normally completed in four years, though this can be extended in special cases depending on individual progress. It prepares graduates for industrial and other positions through extensive training in biopharmaceutics, applied pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, medicinal chemistry, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, molecular biology, toxicology, natural drugs, and phytochemistry. The study programme includes both compulsory and optional courses, totalling the equivalent of 45 ECTS credits, of which 23 ECTS come from elective courses within the framework of developing teaching skills or training of at least 15 hours. Students receive 22 credits from compulsory classes and 23 credits from elective courses. The optional courses are designed to prepare students for an academic teaching career, with particular attention to teaching methods and new technologies in student education; students who make rapid progress in their research may be able to complete the course and receive their degree earlier than the standard timeline. Alongside research in each student's chosen area, the university provides a uniform set of subjects for all PhD students to support interdisciplinary skills, and each student is assigned an individual tutor, typically a senior staff member holding at least an Associate Professor rank, who is directly responsible for supporting the student's research development. Pharmaceutical sciences as a discipline bridges chemistry, biology, and clinical practice, and a four-year doctoral programme of this kind is intended to prepare graduates for research careers in universities, industry, or regulatory and clinical research settings connected to drug development.
