University of Siegen

Master in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

Siegen, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The Master's programme in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at the University of Siegen covers modern aspects of nanoscopic science and technology, spanning basic knowledge through to applications and devices. The programme bridges the departments of Physics, Chemistry, and Electrical Engineering, which together address the full range of nanoscience and nanotechnology disciplines at the university. The 4-semester programme begins with the winter semester. In the first semester, students follow one of three tracks depending on their Bachelor's background, acquiring foundational knowledge in the disciplines they have not yet studied. A seminar on nanoscience research — including topics such as nanosafety — also runs in the first semester. The second semester includes compulsory courses in nanochemistry, physics of nanoelectronic devices, and laboratory courses covering experimental methods including nanotoxicology. The third semester adds a compulsory course in photonics devices, a range of elective courses, and an internship to prepare for the Master's thesis. The fourth semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis, which can be completed at the University of Siegen or at an external institution. The programme aims to develop graduates capable of working independently in scientific fields across traditional subject boundaries and to prepare students for doctoral study or careers in the scientific and technical environment. It is taught at the University of Siegen in Siegen, Germany.
