PhD in Musical Composition PhD / MA by Research

Tuition is £23,390 (full-time) / £11,695 (part-time); applications close 1 June (for September start).

You will spend most of your time in studios and labs creating new musical works. The programme supports the use of electro-acoustic tools, computer-based sound design, traditional instrumental and vocal writing, and interactive or multimedia installations. Regular supervisory meetings give you feedback on drafts, and you are encouraged to present pieces at seminars, conferences and public performances.

The course is aimed at composers who already hold a good honours degree (2:1) or a master’s qualification at merit level and who can provide a portfolio of original material. It suits those who wish to develop an independent research agenda, combine composition with optional technical research, and who are prepared to work autonomously.

Study takes place in the Bramall Music Building and dedicated electro-acoustic studios, with access to the BEAST loudspeaker system and the Centre for Electronic Music. Successful graduates go on to professional composition, academic posts or specialist research roles.
