The PhD project 'Meniscus A Biomechanical Investigation' focuses on the crucial role of the menisci in stabilizing and cushioning the tibiofemoral joint, particularly in the context of orthopaedic injuries. The meniscus, a C-shaped, fibrocartilaginous structure, is essential for load transmission, stabilization, shock absorption, and lubrication of the knee. This project, supervised by Dr Katerina Karali, Dr Roxane Bonithon, and Prof Gordon Blunn in the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, aims to assess the altered load distribution and mechanical behaviour of the meniscus, providing critical insights into the broader biomechanical failure of the knee joint. The meniscus is particularly susceptible to tearing during forceful twisting and pivoting, making it a common injury in contact or dynamic sports. With a prevalence of 12–14% and an incidence of 60 cases per 100,000 people, meniscus tears are a significant health concern, often leading to accelerated cartilage wear and early onset osteoarthritis.

Meniscal injury not only affects the knee joint but can also induce osteonecrosis of the subchondral bone, further complicating recovery and treatment. This project will explore these biomechanical changes and their implications, contributing to a deeper understanding of knee joint dysfunction and potential therapeutic interventions.
