The Master's programme in Mathematics at Saarland University is research-oriented and covers a broad set of areas within pure and applied mathematics. Subject areas include algebraic geometry, algebra and group theory, geometric group theory, applied analysis, functional analysis, operator theory, free probability theory, quantum groups, quantum information theory, mathematical data analysis, numerics for partial differential equations and inverse problems, and stochastics including financial and insurance mathematics. Students may specialise directly in a research area of their choosing, selecting from a mixture of core courses, advanced courses, and seminars without a fixed structure. Part-time study is possible. The department maintains close ties with ongoing research projects, and there is active collaboration with the Department of Computer Science and the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in discrete mathematics, complexity theory, and computational geometry. A new Master's programme in quantum information theory is also being developed in collaboration with the Computer Science and Physics departments. Admission requires a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or a related field; the examination board may impose additional requirements or offer conditional preliminary admission. The programme runs across both winter and summer semesters at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Germany.
