PhD in Mathematics (PhD)

Each week you will devote most of your time to developing original research under the guidance of a supervisor, attending specialised seminars, and collaborating with faculty on ongoing projects. Regular research meetings, data analysis sessions and writing workshops help you refine methods and prepare papers for conferences. You will also join departmental reading groups, present your findings, and may assist in teaching undergraduate courses, providing a balanced mix of independent and communal scholarly activity.

The programme follows a single thesis option that normally spans five years or longer and is studied full-time on-campus. In the first year you complete a small set of advanced courses and an exam that covers all required material, after which you submit a research proposal and move into full-time investigation. Throughout the remaining years you conduct research in areas such as algebra, differential equations, quantum computing, stochastic modelling and topology, benefit from close interaction with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and work toward completing and defending your thesis.

You will graduate as an independent researcher.
