About Master's Programme in Visual Anthropology, Media and Documentary Practices

Tuition is 4,650 EUR per year; applications are due 31 March.

The Master's in Visual Anthropology, Media and Documentary Practices at the University of Münster trains students in both the theory and practice of visual anthropology, documentary arts including film, photography, and installation, media culture, and media anthropology. The programme moves through nine modules, from foundational audio-visual and media anthropology through narrative strategies, practical film production, digital anthropology, sensory ethnography, and project funding strategies, culminating in a supervised final project and Master's thesis. The programme runs over 6 semesters, with a total of 50 days of required in-person attendance in Münster delivered as block courses. Five compulsory tutorials are conducted via video conference between the in-person modules. Students have the option to complete the programme in five semesters rather than six. The structure allows students to remain in Münster or travel to Germany only for the block courses, making it accessible to those continuing professional commitments in their home countries. Each student produces a final media project in the form of a documentary film, photography exhibition, or installation alongside the Master's thesis. A mandatory practical phase (Module 8) can be undertaken part time or full time at any point during the studies. The programme is offered in English at the University of Münster in Münster, Germany, with a yearly tuition fee of €4,650.
