Master's in Medical Informatics

The Master's in Medical Informatics at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts is delivered jointly with University Medicine Essen (University of Duisburg-Essen) and is taught entirely in English over four semesters. The programme centres on the integration of digital solutions in healthcare, with particular emphasis on software and information technologies, artificial intelligence models, cybersecurity, and the socio-economic dimensions of digital transformation in medicine. The curriculum is structured around three pillars: medical informatics modules covering processes, methods, and tools for developing complex software solutions in healthcare; research-oriented project work conducted with the participating universities; and a strong focus on project-oriented, user-centred development. The first two semesters each consist of five compulsory modules covering areas such as 3D computer vision and augmented reality in medicine, advanced biomedical signal and image processing, epidemiology, knowledge-based systems, and applied artificial intelligence. In the third semester, students take elective modules to specialise and complete a research project. The fourth semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis, which may be carried out in cooperation with a clinical partner or company. Elective modules include advanced web engineering, machine learning, human-centred digitalisation, information security, usability engineering, and formal methods, among others. Students are trained to work in diverse, international teams on solutions aimed at improving patient and societal outcomes.
