General linguistics, the subject of the M1 Linguistique track within the Master Sciences du Langage at Université Grenoble Alpes, is the scientific study of human language as a structured system. Students in this field examine phonetics and phonology (the sounds of language), morphology and syntax (word and sentence structure), semantics and pragmatics (meaning and language use in context), and the methods linguists use to describe and compare languages. Coursework typically also covers sociolinguistics, the study of how language varies across social groups and situations, and historical or comparative linguistics, which traces how languages change and relate to one another over time. Programs in general linguistics train students to analyze language data systematically, whether drawn from a single language or compared across several, and to apply linguistic theory to describe patterns that are not always obvious to native speakers. Because linguistics is a foundational discipline that underlies many applied fields, students often develop skills that transfer to language teaching, translation, speech and language therapy support, and computational approaches to language, even where the program itself remains focused on core linguistic theory and description. Graduates from general linguistics programs pursue careers in language teaching, publishing and editorial work, research support roles, and further academic study, as well as roles in fields such as speech therapy assessment support or language policy work that draw on a solid grounding in linguistic analysis. This program is based in Saint Martin D'Heres near Grenoble, France, is delivered in French, and spans two years, with an intake scheduled for September. Yearly tuition is 250 EUR.
